APTG Air Permeability Tester – Gurley Type
The APTG Air Permeability Tester (Gurley Type) by Apple Electroniks is the industry-standard Gurley Densometer for measuring the porosity and air permeability of paper, board, membranes, and plastics. It works by measuring the time taken for a set volume of air to pass through the material under test. Results are expressed in Gurley Seconds — the universal unit for this method.
The instrument features a precision inner cylinder of 567g mass graduated in 25 ml increments up to 100 ml and 50 ml increments from 100 to 300 ml, riding inside an outer oil-sealed cylinder. Timing accuracy is ±0.1s, ensuring repeatable, reliable measurements for quality control in filtration, packaging, and protective material testing.
Supplied with a calibration plate as standard. Compliant with ISO 5636-5-2013.

Key Highlights
Gurley Seconds — Industry Standard Unit
The APTG measures air permeability as time-to-volume — the result expressed in Gurley Seconds is universally recognised across paper, board, packaging, and filtration quality control standards worldwide.
±0.1s Timing Accuracy
Precision timing to ±0.1 second ensures consistent, repeatable measurements between operators and test batches — critical for controlled production environments and laboratory accreditation requirements.
Calibration Plate Included
Each unit is supplied as standard with a calibration plate, enabling in-house verification of instrument performance without sending the unit for external calibration during routine QC operations.
The Gurley method measures the time in seconds for a fixed volume of air to pass through a defined area of material under a constant pressure head created by the weight of the inner cylinder. Results are expressed in Gurley Seconds — a higher number means lower air permeability (denser material). It is the standard method for paper, board, and membrane testing per ISO 5636-5-2013.
The APTG is designed for paper, board, membranes, and plastics — materials where the Gurley densometer method is the accepted standard. It is widely used in packaging labs, paper mills, filtration membrane manufacturers, and flexible plastic film producers for incoming material inspection and in-process quality control.
The APTG has a standard test area of 28.6 mm², which is the specified test area for the Gurley densometer method under ISO 5636-5-2013. This consistent test area ensures results are directly comparable across batches, suppliers, and laboratories using the same standard.
The standard supply includes the APTG instrument and a calibration plate. The calibration plate allows in-house verification of instrument performance at any time, reducing reliance on external calibration services and ensuring measurement confidence throughout the instrument's working life.
The APTG complies with ISO 5636-5-2013 — the international standard specifying the Gurley method for determining the air permeability of paper and board. This standard is recognised by paper mills, packaging manufacturers, and test laboratories globally for quality specification and supplier qualification purposes.
The APTG uses the classic Gurley densometer principle — a weighted inner cylinder displaces air through the sample and the time is recorded manually. The APT/Auto and APT/E are fully electronic instruments that apply a differential pressure and measure airflow digitally across multiple test heads. The APTG is suited for labs requiring ISO 5636-5 Gurley-method compliance specifically; the APT/E and APT/Auto cover a broader range of textile and nonwoven standards with automatic operation.
The APTG requires AC 220V, 50Hz at 100W. It weighs 20 kg and measures 300 mm × 360 mm × 750 mm — compact enough for a standard laboratory bench. No compressed air or special utilities are required beyond a standard power outlet.
The APTG is widely used in paper and board manufacturing, packaging material QC, filtration membrane production, plastic film quality testing, and research laboratories. Any application that requires ISO 5636-5 Gurley method compliance for porosity or air permeability characterisation will benefit from this instrument.
